Abstract

Since the mid-70s and following the oil crisis, much research has been developed in order to diversify energy sources and decoupling the world economy from fossil fuels. At present, the development of technologies to harness alternative energies, the increased of small-scale storage systems and communication technologies to link and command these elements have begun a transformation of the electricity grid, introducing the concept of intelligent grid (Smart Grid). The intermediate step in this transition is to create areas of the grid that have the "intelligence" to link distributed storage and generation to the grid, keeping high standards of quality and reliability at reasonably low prices; these sections of the grid are called micro-grids, a novel feature of the micro-grids is the possibility to participate in the energy market, as a "virtual unit" grouping all their demand and generation to interact with the market. This paper presents a brief introduction about micro-grids and provides an overview of the use of technologies for security, operation, management and its control.
